CBM calculator guide for exporters and importers

This free CBM calculator works out shipping volume, volumetric weight, chargeable weight and container utilization for one or many carton sizes. Below is how each number is calculated and how freight companies commonly use it.

      What is CBM?

CBM stands for cubic metre (m³). It is the space a shipment occupies: a box 1 metre long, 1 metre wide and 1 metre high is exactly 1 CBM. Freight forwarders, shipping lines and warehouses use CBM to price sea freight, plan container loading and allocate storage space.

      How to calculate CBM

      CBM = Length × Width × Height × Quantity

All three dimensions must be in metres. If you measure in centimetres, divide the result by 1,000,000. For example, 50 cartons of 60 × 40 × 40 cm is 60 × 40 × 40 × 50 ÷ 1,000,000 = 4.8 CBM. For millimetres divide by 1,000,000,000; for inches multiply cubic inches by 0.000016387; for feet multiply cubic feet by 0.0283168. This shipping CBM calculator converts every unit for you and adds up multiple carton sizes.

      How is shipping CBM used?

In sea freight, CBM decides two things. For LCL (shared container) shipments, the forwarder usually charges per W/M, the greater of your CBM or your weight in metric tonnes. For FCL (full container) shipments, CBM tells you which container size to book and whether your cargo needs one container or several. A container loading calculator like this one compares your volume and weight against 20FT, 40FT and 40FT High Cube planning capacities.

      What is volumetric weight?

Volumetric (or dimensional) weight converts volume into a notional weight, so that light but bulky cargo pays for the space it takes on an aircraft or courier van. The formula is volume in cm³ divided by a divisor. Air cargo commonly uses 6000 cm³/kg and express couriers often use 5000 cm³/kg, but carriers set their own divisors, which is why both are editable in this volumetric weight calculator.

      What is chargeable weight?

Chargeable weight is the weight a carrier bills you on. For air and courier shipments it is commonly the greater of the actual gross weight and the volumetric weight. A carton of pillows is charged on its volumetric weight; a carton of metal parts is charged on its actual weight. Use the chargeable weight calculator above to see which applies to your cargo.

      What is LCL?

LCL (Less than Container Load) means your cargo shares a container with other shippers' cargo. You pay for the W/M your cargo uses, usually with a minimum charge of 1 W/M, plus consolidation and handling fees at each end. LCL usually makes sense for smaller shipments, often below roughly 10 to 15 CBM depending on the route.

      What is FCL?

FCL (Full Container Load) means you book an entire container for your cargo and pay a flat rate per container regardless of how full it is. It is usually faster and involves less handling than LCL. As volume grows, an FCL often becomes cheaper per CBM than LCL, so it is worth comparing both quotes in the mid-range. The LCL vs FCL calculator above does that comparison with your own rates.

      20FT vs 40FT vs 40HQ

Container capacity is not the same as practical loading capacity. This calculator uses these planning volumes, which you can change in the configuration:

      ContainerTypical internal sizeInternal volumePlanning volume
      20FT Standardabout 5.9 × 2.35 × 2.39 mabout 33 CBMabout 28 CBM
      40FT Standardabout 12.0 × 2.35 × 2.39 mabout 67 CBMabout 58 CBM
      40FT High Cube (40HQ)about 12.0 × 2.35 × 2.69 mabout 76 CBMabout 68 CBM

A 40FT High Cube is about 30 cm taller than a standard 40FT, which helps with light, bulky cargo. For heavy cargo, payload is often the limit before volume, and a 40FT does not carry much more weight than a 20FT. That is why heavy shipments are often split across 20FT containers.

      Frequently asked questions

      What is CBM?

CBM means cubic metre (m³), the volume of a space 1 metre long, 1 metre wide and 1 metre high. It is the standard measure of shipment volume in international freight.

      How do I calculate CBM?

Multiply length × width × height × quantity with all dimensions in metres. If you measure in centimetres, divide the result by 1,000,000. For example, one 60 × 40 × 40 cm carton is 0.096 CBM.

How many cubic feet is 1 CBM?

One cubic metre equals about 35.3147 cubic feet. To convert, multiply CBM by 35.3146667.

How do I calculate CBM for multiple cartons?

Calculate the CBM of each carton size, multiply by its quantity, then add the results together. This calculator does this automatically: add one row for each carton size.

      What is volumetric weight?

Volumetric weight is a notional weight based on size. It is calculated as volume in cm³ divided by a divisor, commonly 6000 cm³/kg for air cargo and 5000 cm³/kg for couriers. Divisors vary by carrier.

How is air freight chargeable weight calculated?

Air freight is commonly charged on the greater of the actual gross weight and the volumetric weight. For example, cargo weighing 500 kg with a volumetric weight of 800 kg would usually be charged as 800 kg, subject to the airline or forwarder’s rules.

      What is LCL W/M?

W/M means weight or measurement. In LCL sea freight the chargeable measure is commonly the greater of the volume in CBM or the gross weight in metric tonnes. 10 CBM weighing 8 tonnes is 10 W/M; 10 CBM weighing 15 tonnes is 15 W/M.

How many CBM fit in a 20FT container?

A 20FT container has about 33 CBM of internal volume. For planning, many shippers assume about 25 to 28 CBM of usable space, depending on carton sizes and loading.

How many CBM fit in a 40FT container?

A standard 40FT container has about 67 CBM of internal volume. For planning, about 55 to 58 CBM of usable space is a common assumption.

How many CBM fit in a 40HQ?

A 40FT High Cube (40HQ) has about 76 CBM of internal volume. For planning, about 65 to 68 CBM of usable space is a common assumption.

What is the difference between CBM and cubic feet?

Both measure volume. CBM is metric (cubic metres) and cubic feet is imperial. 1 CBM is about 35.31 cubic feet, and 1 cubic foot is about 0.0283 CBM.

      What is chargeable weight?

Chargeable weight is the weight a carrier uses to calculate your freight charge. It is usually the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight for air and courier, and the greater of CBM and metric tonnes (W/M) for LCL sea freight.

Is CBM the same as shipping weight?

No. CBM measures volume and shipping weight measures mass. A shipment can be large and light or small and heavy, which is why carriers compare the two when deciding what to charge.

Can I calculate multiple carton sizes?

Yes. Add as many cargo rows as you need, each with its own dimensions, quantity and weights. You can also duplicate a row or use a preset to speed things up.

Is container capacity the same as practical loading capacity?

No. Carton sizes, pallets, door clearance, stacking limits and weight distribution mean you can rarely use the full internal volume. This calculator applies a practical utilization percentage (85% by default) that you can change.
